The surprising link between tea and the World Cup…

Regarded as the greatest sporting event there is, the World Cup is a special occasion that brings together 32 nations for a month of none stop football, and it’s finally upon us. Tonight will see England begin their campaign with their first group stage game against Tunisia, before concluding their scheduled fixtures against Panama and Belgium in a bid to qualify for the knockout stages. It’s safe to say that we don’t usually impress on the grand stage, but this year could see a surprise boost to our chances. Mate tea, anyone?

What is Mate tea?

Pronounced Ma-Teh, it’s made by steeping the dried leaves of a Paraguayan holly plant in hot water, and it has been best described as somewhere between a grassy green tea and a bergamotless Earl Grey. Mate tea contains half the amount of caffeine as what you’d find in the average americano, so it doesn’t give you the jitters caused from the ‘caffeine crash’. Despite this, enthusiasts say that mate tea still provides the same boost as a cup of coffee and the endorphin buzz from chocolate, while providing similar health benefits to a typical cup of tea. Digestion is just one of these benefits.

What’s the link to the World Cup?

Tottenham Hotspur and England utility player Eric Dier recently stated he was ‘slightly addicted’ to mate tea. This may stem from Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino’s love for it, which is no surprise seeing as mate tea is regarded as the National drink of Argentina. If the benefits of the beverage are to be believed then, Argentina could be on their way to a third world cup success after winning the tournament in 1978 and 1986 respectively. Meanwhile, will Eric Dier be carrying England to success?

World Cup fever.

Even those who don’t enjoy football are finding it difficult to avoid the optimism surrounding the Fifa World Cup. It’s a huge occasion that brings together people from all over the world, and it’s hard not to get involved through light-hearted predictions and sweepstakes at work.

Here’s hoping that the Three Lions can do us proud, and everyone at Coinadrink is roaring them on.
