Low sugar McVities biscuits with the same great taste?

We all love biscuits, don’t we? In fact, a recent blog post on our online shop revealed that 99 of every 100 UK households purchase them every week. But whilst biscuits are close to our hearts, the high sugar contents mean they remain very much a guilty pleasure. Pladis, the global snacking company behind McVities, are now trying to rewrite that narrative, and many of their popular biscuits have received a sugar reduction by up to 10%! This is what it means for Coinadrink and Express Refreshments.

A big change for McVities biscuits.

We’d like to bet that you absolutely adore McVities biscuits, because who doesn’t? A recent study from YouGov carried out last year found Chocolate Digestives to be the UK’s most popular biscuit, whilst the McVities brand are within the top 5 purchased on our shores.

Needless to say, a brand that is at the forefront of the industry must keep on top of growing trends. And healthier eating is arguably one of the biggest.

Put simply, sugar is a nutritional devil that many companies can no longer shy away from. You could say sugar is what fat was 20 years ago. This year, two thirds of Europeans say they are looking to reduce their sugar intake, so this big change from Pladis has come at the right time.

In what is a breakthrough in sugar reduction, they have reduced the sugar content by up to 10% in nine of their most popular biscuit varieties, as part of a lengthy project to make their products healthier.

The reformulated biscuits include McVitie’s Original Digestives, McVitie’s Rich Tea, McVitie’s Chocolate Digestives (Milk and Dark), McVitie’s Original Hobnobs, McVitie’s Chocolate Hobnobs (Milk and Dark), McVitie’s Caramel Digestives and McVitie’s Ginger Nuts. These make up over 50% of all McVitie’s sales in the UK.

McVitie’s Original Digestives were already one of the lowest-sugar biscuits available and well below Public Health England’s target of 26.2g of sugar per 100g. However, they now contain just 15.1g of sugar per 100g.

Meanwhile, McVitie’s Rich Tea biscuits now contain just 18.5g of sugar per 100g, their Original Hobnobs now contain 22.9g of sugar per 100g and McVitie’s Milk Chocolate Digestives now contain 28.5g sugar per 100g.

Same great taste. No, really!

You could be forgiven for arguing it’s impossible for a product to taste “the same” if you reduce the sugar content. But you’d be surprised at the lengths Pladis have gone to here.

The new recipes have been achieved through a careful re-balancing of ingredients to reduce sugar and salt, in order to get below, or as close to, Public Health England’s target as possible while maintaining McVitie’s distinctive taste.

Pladis’ Research and Development team tested the change with hundreds of consumers, including a group of self-confessed McVitie’s superfans, to ensure that the reduction in sugar could not be spotted.

They even made sure the biscuits tasted exactly the same when dunked in a cup of tea and used a ‘mechanical dunking arm’ in the laboratory to record the time to break when dunked! Seeing as up to a fifth of people like to dunk their biscuits, this is big news.

Enjoy low sugar McVities biscuits today!

Keep an eye out for lower sugar McVities today. You will be able to enjoy lower sugar McVities products in your Micro Market, and we regularly interchange what’s available as so to provide you with more choice. Next time you see them, give them a try!

What are your thoughts on new lower sugar McVities? Are you excited? Apprehensive? Comment below and share your thoughts!

Telford and Wrekin Council install fresh milk vending machine with the help of Coinadrink!

Last week Telford and Wrekin Council had a milk vending machine installed in their two town centre buildings. This was fitted by Taylor’s Farm in an effort to ditch single-use plastic. In similar fashion to a project we worked on last year, Coinadrink provided the “fresh food” machine that we adapted to dispense the glass bottles required.

A background to the fresh milk vending machine…

Prior to the fresh milk vending machine being installed, Telford and Wrekin Council estimated that there were around 150 single-use plastic bottles filling staff fridges at any one time. This encouraged waste and a solution needed to be found.

Only last summer the council committed to replacing single-use plastics from its operations with more sustainable alternatives by 2023.

The milk vending machine enables staff to purchase a reusable glass bottle and refill this with either whole or semi-skimmed milk using the facility provided by Taylor’s Farm. This will benefit a high volume of staff in a high volume of shared offices, meaning the opportunity to reduce waste is massive for the council and its employees.

Meanwhile, the machine dispensing the glass bottles was proudly supplied by Coinadrink. We collaborated with Taylor’s Farm to come up with a solution for Telford and Wrekin Council, and soon realised that the best option was the Crane Shopper 2 carousel machine.

We successfully managed to create a solution to stop the glass bottles from rolling around and breaking when the machine was in use. Our in-house team soon installed the machine and we provided extensive training, so the council were able to use it effectively.

And this isn’t the first time we have got on board with such a sustainable project…

A fresh milk case of Deja Vu…

Cast your mind back to January 2019. Shared on the BBC, H W Chatham & Co Farm in Brockton, Shropshire, installed a fresh milk vending machine! Once again, we were proud to assist with the project using the Crane Shopper 2 carousel machine.

You can read more about that story here.

Coinadrink is always happy to help with sustainable projects as and where we can. And with demand for fresh milk vending machines growing, who’s to say this won’t be the last time we provide our assistance?

Hot drinks recipes to keep you going throughout Easter!

In need of some ideas for Easter? We have got you covered. Check out how to make a Cadbury’s creme egg hot chocolate, Nutella hot chocolate and a Cadbury’s mini egg milkshake! These three delicious beverages will leave you begging for more. Keep reading for some hot drinks recipes this Easter!

Let’s start with Cadbury’s creme egg hot chocolate…

To start you off you will need the following ingredients: 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 5 creme eggs, chopped and ¼ cup of heavy whipping cream.

Now you have all of this, in a medium saucepan, heat the milk until its hot but ensure it doesn’t boil. Then, whisk in 2 tablespoons of sugar, cocoa powder, salt, the creme eggs and heat until the chocolate melts. Following this, whisk until everything is smooth and pour into a mug.

Once this is complete, in a large bowl beat together the whipping cream until it thickens and gradually add in the remaining 1 teaspoon sugar. Beat this until it is thick and stiff peaks form. Finally, pipe this on top of the hot chocolate. Doesn’t this sound scrumptious? If you are looking for an alternative, Nutella should do the trick!

Silky smooth Nutella for you and your beverage!

To make a Nutella hot chocolate you will need; 4 cups of low fat/skim milk, 2 tablespoons of Nutella, 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Some optional toppings you could incorporate are; marshmallows, crushed hazelnuts, chocolate chips and maybe even some extra Nutella!

The process is simple! You will need to heat up the milk in a medium sized saucepan on medium-high heat until it begins to steam. After, add the Nutella spread, cocoa powder and sugar and whisk until it is fully combined. Lastly, bring to a gentle simmer while stirring, take off the heat and serve with your preferred toppings.

One more hot drinks recipe! Check out this Cadburys Mini Egg Milkshake recipe…

For this beverage you will need; 180 g (1½ cup) of Cadburys Mini Eggs, 400 ml (1½ cup) of milk, 600 ml (6 big scoops) of vanilla ice cream, 250 ml (1 cup) of double cream and 1 teaspoon of hot chocolate powder. Now you have all of this let’s get onto making it!

Whip the cream until there are soft peaks on the mix then put the Mini Eggs and milk in the blender and blend until the mini eggs are finely chopped. Afterwards, add the ice cream, then blend, until you have a thick, creamy milkshake consistency. Finally, pour into glasses and pipe on the cream. Dust it lightly with hot chocolate powder and add the mini eggs and a straw.

Did you know that Twix is short for ‘Twin’ and ‘Bix’?

It might seem strange, but Twix is a morph between the words Twin and Bix. ‘Twin’ meaning two of and ‘Bix’ being the British shorthand of the word biscuits! Interesting, right? This isn’t the only thing we have in store for you today. Keep reading to find out what new Twix products we have and how it can benefit you…

There are orange, mint and cappuccino flavoured Twix’s?

Let’s dive into the background of Twix! This original 2 finger butter cookie bar with caramel and milk was created in 1967 by Mars Limited in the UK. However, this now well-loved bar was not as popular back then. It was only when in 1983 the company struck gold with the peanut butter Twix!

As sales grew, the bar was renamed from ‘Raider’ to Twix and sold worldwide. Their slogan was “Raider is now Twix, nothing else changes” and did well to captivate the audience’s attention. This is where they took the opportunity to expand their product line and release many other varieties like Twix cookie and cream, dark chocolate, fudge, coffee, mint slice and orange flavour. Although, some more recent launches are Twix Cappuccino and Twix Java.

Keep your eyes peeled for the appearance of these new Twix products!

Alongside the original Twix bar and the white chocolate flavoured bar, we are soon to welcome the salted caramel Twix and Twix Topps to our Micro Markets and snack machines.

The salted caramel Twix is a two-finger bar of salty, rich goodness and anyone would be crazy not to give this a try! The Twix Tops are making a comeback from the past! They are a thin layer of biscuit with gooey caramel on the inside, topped with a smooth layer of milk chocolate! They are made with a lot less biscuit compared to the normal bars, therefore having a lower number of calories. Perfect for anyone looking for a treat!

Our Micro Markets provide premium refreshment for any Express Refreshments consumer so feel free to find out more information about what we can offer you and how you will benefit. Go online to book a showroom appointment or contact us via Alistair@coinadrink.co.uk.
